Laboratory Services

Hands On Medicine provides some lab work in-house, and is CLIA-certified. For more comprehensive blood and pathology testing we collaborate with Quest Labs.

Cross-Discipline Collaboration

We are happy to collaborate with your naturopath, acupuncturist, chiropractor, counselors, etc. All of the providers at Hands On Medicine take pride in our openness, appreciation, and practice of treatments other than exclusive allopathic interventions. Your health information is legally protected. In order to send or receive information/records/notes between providers you must sign a release of information. Our clinicians are responsible for reviewing and follow-through on all labs drawn at Hands On Medicine. We will therefore only perform phlebotomy and order other diagnostic test our clinicians deem appropriate.

Referrals

Hands On Medicine

As primary care providers we manage most health concerns. However sometimes a specialist is necessary. We are happy to work with you and your insurance to find a specialist taking your health plan. We also have our established specialists with whom we have collaborated in the past. For those without insurance, we have referrals for community resources. If you have seen a specialist through a self-referral, please ask them to send us notes. Thank you.

Travel Medicine

We know our patients travel all over the world. Hands On Medicine staff have personal and professional experience in travel medicine. We routinely advise, vaccinate and treat travelers and are certified to administer the yellow fever vaccine. In addition, we are able to order most other travel vaccines and offer advice to stay healthy on your travels.

Supplements

We carry a small line of nutrition supplements and herbal products, though we are not in the business of pushing products. We only carry products that have been studied as effective treatments, are lab tested for purity, and that we frequently recommend. For more information regarding supplements and herbal products we recommend you visit the National Center For Complementary and Alternative Medicine website, or the Office of Dietary Supplements, or ask us at your next appointment.

On Call Coverage

Hands On Medicine provides 24 hour coverage 7 days a week for urgent needs. Because many insurance companies provide 24 hour nurse advice lines, many insurance plans do not cover this service. There is a $75 fee for after-hours telephone triage and consultation. We strongly recommend you familiarize yourself with your insurance plan/coverage.

Emergency Department Visits/Hospital Admissions

If you are admitted to the hospital or emergency room, please let us know as soon as possible so we can retrieve chart notes from your visit. Hospital staff will most likely ask for the name of your primary care provider, however to ensure these records are received in a timely manner, it is best if we know about your hospital or emergency room stay as soon as possible after your discharge. If you need a follow-up appointment after an emergency room visit or hospital stay (for example, suture removal), please let us know as soon as possible so we can get you scheduled.

If an emergency department transport is needed from Hands On Medicine, you will be likely transported to Legacy Emanuel Hospital, however our clinicians have a working relationship with all the local hospitals.

As we are not a hospital-based practice, we do not round on our patients during their hospital stays. However we do work closely with the hospitals and specialists to come to decisions regarding our patients care. That being said, don’t be surprised if we come check on you anyway.
